What is a level measurement?

How is the level measured?

Continuous level measurement:

In continuous measurement, the fill level is continuously monitored, e.g. in silos or other containers, so that the precise height of the liquid can be checked at any time. This type of measurement is used to control and monitor processes and uses various sensor technologies: ultrasound, radar, capacitive measurement methods or hydrostatic level measurement

Point level detection:

Point level detection is a level monitoring system in which sensors are used to determine whether a predetermined level is exceeded or undercut by indicating that the limit value has been reached. This level measurement is used for safety and alarm functions and ensures that there is no vacancy or overfilling.

  • Measurable media: Measurable media includes liquids, pastes, powders, bulk solids, and oils. This diversity allows it to be used in a wide variety of industrial and agricultural applications. 
  • Locations: Level measurements are used in various containers such as process tanks and storage tanks that store water, oil, wastewater and heating oil, as well as in silos, which are mainly found in the process industry. 

Continuous level measurement is particularly common in sectors such as agriculture, chemicals, petrochemicals, andwater and wastewater treatment plants. It makes it possible to continuously monitor and document the exact fill level, which is essential for efficient process control and monitoring. These sensors are capable of providing reliable data under a wide range of conditions, including high temperatures and aggressive media processing. 

Point level sensing, on the other hand, is used to ensure that critical maximum or minimum levels are not exceeded or undercut, which is of great importance in applications such as water management or chemical production. With this type of measurement, situations that could lead to overfilling or dry running can be avoided. In this way, point level measurement contributes to the safety and efficiency of industrial processes.
