What is an intrinsically safe level sensor and how does it work?

An explosion-proof level sensor is a special sensor that is used for level measurement in containers or tanks and is also designed for use in potentially explosive environments. It is very reliable and performs a precise tank measurement. Sensors of this type are designed in such a way that they are not a source of ignition and thus minimize the risk of an explosion. This is achieved through various safety measures that make the sensors intrinsically safe.

The level sensor works by detecting a physical signal, in this case the hydrostatic pressure in the liquid, and converting it into an electrical one. This signal is in turn converted into a standardized output signal such as 4-20mA, which can be further processed by the control or monitoring unit.

Level sensors (explosion-proof) – Where are they used?

Explosion-proof level sensors are relevant for various areas:

  • Oil & Gas Industry: Explosion-proof level sensors are used in the oil and gas industry to level monitoring storage containers or pipelines. These sensors are specially designed for hazardous areas and contribute to safety and environmental protection in sensitive areas.
  • Process technology: Here, the sensors are used in explosion-proof design to ensure the proper operation of industrial plants. They are used in tanks and containers in which hazardous substances are stored.
  • Chemical & Petrochemical: Explosion-proof level sensors are also used in the chemical and petrochemical industries, where they accurately measure the level in tanks and vessels containing hazardous or flammable substances, contributing to the safety and efficiency of equipment.

What are the technical specifications of our level sensors with explosion protection?

Our level sensors in this category are designed for temperature classes from T6 and are therefore suitable for extreme conditions. According to the customer's wishes, different pressure areas can be covered. We can modify the electrical connections according to your wishes. This also applies to the process connections and the electrical output assignment. Our PSX series is also supplied with different cable lengths as standard. Users have the freedom to choose the measuring range according to their needs.

What approvals and protection classes do our level sensors in explosion-proof design have?

Our products in this category are certified according to the highest standards. For example, the ATEX Directive applies to our level sensors and they are approved for the European market. In addition, they have the international IECEx and CSA approvals, which enable their worldwide use. The sensors are suitable for use in ATEX zones 0, 1 and 2, which makes them particularly versatile and safe.

Why is our intrinsically safe level sensor the right choice?

By using our intrinsically safe level sensors, you benefit from increased operational reliability as they minimize risk in hazardous environments. In addition, our sensors ensure reliable and precise measurements, making them ideal for tank measurement. Another advantage is the modification option that you get with our customer-specific solutions. This means that the products can be specially adapted to your requirements.
