What is a piezoresistive pressure sensor?

A piezoresistive pressure sensor, piezoresistive pressure transducer or pressure transmitter, is a high-precision measuring instrument in pressure measurement technology that is based on the piezoresistive effect. It uses a semiconductor or silicon-based membrane that responds to mechanical pressure.

Piezoresistive Pressure Sensor: Structure

A piezoresistive pressure sensor is made up of several precisely tuned components. At the center is a membrane made of semiconductor material, usually silicon or stainless steel, which deforms when pressure changes. If the diaphragm is made of silicon, piezoresistive elements are integrated into it, while the piezoresistive elements, whose electrical resistance changes proportionally to the deformation, are located on top of it in a stainless steel diaphragm. The membrane is firmly mounted on a support structure that ensures the necessary mechanical stability. The entire sensor mechanism is embedded in a robust housing that protects it from environmental influences. The piezoresistive elements are connected to the evaluation electronics via electrical connections, which record the resistance changes and convert them into measurable pressure values.

Piezoresistive pressure sensor: How it works and benefits

Piezoresistive pressure sensors work according to a simple but extremely effective principle: the piezoresistive effect. This describes the change in electrical resistance in semiconductor materials due to stretching or compression. When mechanical pressure is applied to the sensor membrane, the electrical resistance of the semiconductor material changes proportionally to the change in pressure and is converted into an electrical signal. This signal can then be further processed to enable precise pressure measurements.

Pressure sensors with a piezoresistive effect offer numerous advantages:

  • High accuracy: The precise detection of pressure changes makes our sensors ideal for applications that require the highest measurement accuracy.
  • Robustness: Thanks to their rubust design, they are resistant to moisture, mechanical stress and, as high-temperature pressure sensors, also to extreme temperatures.
  • Compact design: Our miniature pressure sensors, which are also piezoresistive, are ideal for applications with limited installation space.
  • Adaptability: Our pressure transmitters can be customized to meet specific requirements.
  • Reliability: The high-quality materials such as silicon, stainless steel, titanium and solid construction ensure a long service life and reliable performance.

Difference between piezoresistive pressure transmitters and other pressure sensors

Compared to capacitive, inductive or optical pressure sensors, piezoresistive pressure sensors offer better sensitivity and accuracy in pressure measurement. While capacitive sensors react to the change in capacitance between two electrodes and optical sensors use light reflections, the piezoresistive principle is characterized by its direct change in resistance in the semiconductor material. This results in greater precision and reliability, especially in industrial applications.
