What is level monitoring?

Level monitoring involves measuring stocks of liquids, which can be done in containers and storage tanks, for example. The measurement is either continuous or by recording fixed point levels. Precise and reliable monitoring is necessary in order to be able to control processes optimally. If you use sensors for level monitoring, you benefit not only from more efficient processes but also from minimized safety risks that can occur due to a level that is too high or too low.

How do continuous measurements and point level surveys differ in practice?

In practice, continuous level monitoring allows you to always be informed about the current fill level, making processes adaptable and controllable in real time. This is particularly important in areas such as the chemical industry or water and wastewater treatment.

Point level detection, on the other hand, focuses on achieving predefined fill level values. A signal is triggered as soon as these are exceeded or undercut. The signal means either a warning or the start of a gear change. To prevent overfilling or dry running, this method is best suited for use within security and alarm functions. Point level detection is particularly relevant for level monitoring in water management or chemical production, where certain levels must not be exceeded.

What are the technical features of our level sensors?

Level monitoring is carried out with the help of level sensors. Our models, such as the PS1/17 level probes, are made of robust materials such as stainless steel, steel or titanium, which makes them resistant to salt water and extreme conditions. With certificates according to ATEX, IECEx and CSA, our intrinsically safe level probes with explosion protection such as the PSX2 are reliable and approved for permanent use in hazardous areas (up to Ex Zone 0). They also meet the IP68 protection class. The products can  be flexibly adapted to your specific requirements by means of adjustable parameters and are easy to install thanks to different cable lengths

What are the areas of application for level monitoring?

  • In industrial process technology , level sensors are essential for the continuous monitoring of liquids and bulk materials.
  • The Marine, on the other hand, uses them in the deep sea and in wells, and they are suitable for precise level monitoring in wells, water reservoirs and tanks, making a significant contribution to the efficiency and safety of many plants.
  • In environmental technology, level monitoring is important for nature conservation. Reliable measurements help to prevent overcrowding or insufficient water levels and to further preserve ecosystems.

Can our level sensors also be used as limit switches?

Level probes could also be configured as electronic limit switches. Our level probe switches work electronically, similar to our pressure switches. These can be set for window operation, as normally open (NO) or normally closed (NC). At the switching points you specify, the desired electrical output signal is either output or "switched off".
