What is a piezoresistive force sensor?

With the piezoresistive force transmitter, a high-precision measuring device, forces can  be measured precisely and reliably. Like our miniature force sensors, they work according to the piezoresistive principle. This is based on the property of certain semiconductor materials to change their electrical resistance when exposed to mechanical stresses. The mechanical forces are converted into electrical signals by the transmitters

How does a piezoresistive force transmitter work?

A piezoresistive force transmitter or force sensor consists of a sensor element, which is often made of a semiconductor material such as silicon. This material is applied to a substrate in a thin-film process and forms the basis of the sensor.

The piezoresistive effect is detected by a Wheatston measuring bridge. If force is applied by mechanical forces, the suspension body in the sensor is deformed. This results in stretching or compression, so that the resistance and the tension in the measuring bridge changes. This voltage change is then converted into a proportional analog output signal – making it possible to precisely measure the applied force.

Advantages of piezoresistive force sensors

  • High precision: Piezoresistive technology enables accurate and reliable force measurement.
  • Robustness: These piezoresistive transmitters are resistant to mechanical stress and environmental influences.
  • Fast response time: Forces are monitored quickly and accurately in real time thanks to the sensors.
  • Flexibility: They are available in different shapes and sizes to meet specific requirements.

Where are piezoresistive force transmitters used?

Piezoresistive force sensors are used in a wide range of industries and offer decisive advantages due to their high precision and reliability:

  • Aerospace: Monitoring structural loads and forces in aircraft components to ensure the safety and efficiency of aircraft.
  • Civil and mechanical engineering: Used in structures and machinery to check and control loads, which helps to extend service life and prevent failures.
  • Agricultural Engineering: Measuring forces in agricultural machinery and equipment to optimize operations and maximize crop yields.
  • Packaging industry: Control of forces in packaging machines to ensure the quality and consistency of packaging processes.
  • Sports Engineering: Used in equipment to analyze and optimize athletes' performance by precisely measuring the forces applied in various sports.
